At this moment of unfolding drama

By worldly standards, Christ came into our world at a most unpropitious time and under curious circumstances. The prophecies of His coming gathered around him after the fact. Then as now, the Spirit moves according to a logic which is only recognizable in retrospect. From all available evidence, the Spirit who awakens the lethargic Christian faith in a person or a people does so according to the same inscrutable principle, detectable, if at all, only in hindsight.

The wise men had only the crudest astrological instruments of discerning the world-altering event that had taken place in a cow shed in a backwater of the Roman Empire.

For reasons we cannot fathom, we have been placed at precisely this moment in the unfolding drama of world reclamation. This season when we celebrate the first coming of Christ, therefore, let us open our hearts, the better to be drawn into His ongoing penetration of our lives and our world. By recognizing the Christological dimension of our moment in history, may we face the new year with a spirit of expectation, attentive to how each of us is given some small, yet eternally significant, part in the true drama of world history.
